Replacements being discussed for replacing natural gas include:
- coal
- bitumen
- geothermal
- nuclear

The THAI process doesn't use either natural gas or water. If it proves to be a reliable and scaleable technology, it could dramatically increase production from the oil sands (and perhaps other heavy oil deposits around the world).
