You'd almost think Farrakhan wanted to hurt Obama.
His kind words put Obama in a terrible situation.
Firstly, Obama didn't seek him out, as you say- but it can often seem churlish to say something bad about someone, even someone you disagree with, when they are saying something nice about you- and it IS churlish- let's just face that.
Secondly, Farrakhan has great support in the black community, and not without reason. While he has some truly awful views, he also has some rather good ones. It's like having a Grand Dragon of the KKK who also had a decent strategy for getting people off meth. People like that are a problem in the world. I don't know how you solve that. I'm sure Obama knows much more about Farrakhan's good works than I do, but even I know he's done some.
Some in the media seem to want Obama to beat up on Farrakhan, BECAUSE Farrakhan said a few kind words about Obama. I think Obama should (and did) repudiate the views of Farrakhan, and he should say he didn't ask for the kind words, but why should be go further than that? I don't get it. Seems like everyone wants a big fight over this- and for me it's solved with 1. I didn't ask for it, 2. I don't agree with the man and 3. I can't help it if someone whose views I don't like, likes me. I mean what's not to understand here? |
