Certain elements on the relatively far left in the US thought, they where the good guys.

Much more common than that belief was the thought that why they were not exactly good, they helped make Cuba a better place than it would have otherwise been, because they have universal health care, etc. I still probably wouldn't call this idea common, but it isn't rare or limited to the far left in the US.

And then I imagine some aren't as much pro Castro or Che, as much as they are any conservative/Republican, and prone to celebrate anything that conservatives tend to denounce.

To be fair its not only the left that supports dictators. Many on the right think Pinochet was good for Chile. I think they have a stronger argument than those who say the same thing about Castro, but Pinochet's regime did murder over 2000 people and detain and abuse tens of thousands.
