Sugar cane one of the most efficient plants in the world is at best... 3% efficient.

But there are some algae that produce lipids (oils) equal to 30-50% of their mass:

Algal strains such as Botryococcus braunii can produce long chain hydrocarbons representing 86% of its dry weight. The green alga Botryococcus is unique in the quality and quantity of the liquid hydrocarbons it produces. Some scientists consider the ancestors of Botryococcus to be responsible for many of the world's fossil fuel deposits.

Can sugar cane beat that figure?

That is the most critical thing missing from this entire ethanol debacle.

No.. the most critical thing missing from the ethanol equation is a watermelon and a funnel..

Since Ethanol requires a completely separate logistical delivery network (pipelines.. tankers.. etc), it's just not a viable fuel to mix with gasoline. It either needs to replace gasoline, or it should be left in the hands of licensed bartenders.. ;0)
