Well, I learned one thing I had forgotten (or never knew). The labor force participation rate includes the unemployed looking for work. So, no, that is not an acceptable metric for very obvious reasons. Perhaps that is why you said "great extent" and I failed to understand that.

However, since LFPR includes all the unemployed looking for work, that is not a very useful metric for deciding if unemployment is up.
