The dorm life is needed as a learning experience. You can learn about excessive drinking either by watching your friends barf their guts out, or you can do it yourself. Life lessons with an edge, while you are still young enough to recover quickly. Living with friends may not be as useful as being in an appropriate fraternity or sorority. Some on campus living, like UC Berkeley's International House, can be great experiences too. en.wikipedia.org
