Ecuador, Venezuela Sever Diplomatic Relations With Colombia
2 minutes ago
(RTTNews) - Ecuador and Venezuela have cut diplomatic relations with Colombia in a deepening crisis over a cross-border raid by Colombian troops, which killed senior Farc rebel Raul Reyes and 16 others.

Ecuador, which had already withdrawn its ambassador from Bogota and expelled Colombia's ambassador from Quito, announced on Monday it would break all diplomatic relations with the neighboring country over the cross-border raid.

It was followed by Venezuela announcing that all the Colombian diplomats, including its ambassador in Caracas, were being told to leave the country.

An emergency meeting of the Organization of American States has been convened on Tuesday to discuss the crisis.

While UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed concern about "increased tensions and heightened rhetoric" in the region, the U.S. state department supported Colombia's right to defend itself, and urged the countries involved to solve the issue through dialogue.
