Karen -

I had a lot of trouble coming up with "convalescent" for a period of time. It's still difficult for me, but I get there a lot faster these days.

I also went through a period of a couple of years where I would be able to think of every word I wanted except whatever one was the exact subject I was talking about. For example, in a job interview I was talking about a large project I had managed. The project was mentioned on my resume.

The interviewer asked what software package we had used. I was able to tell him that, among other things, the project had involved the installation and customization of a network management product that aggregated the inputs from a whole range of other network management packages, so that their alerts could be seen on a single screen. But for the life of me I could not remember the name of the main product.

During that period, if I wanted to talk about a band, say, I'd be able to tell you all kinds of things about the band, what style of music they played, some of their songs, etc., but never the name of the band.

It's a specific type of aphasia that is permanent in some cases. It was very frustrating. I'm pleased to report that it gradually went away on its own.
