<<So how do you reconcile those two disparate notions?>>

They are not "disparate notions". I am not a rigid libertarian nor a rigid liberal. I'm flexible and don't take refuge in dogma or political ideology. The government is not responsible to provide a healthy retirement income for those who can easily do so for themselves if they just assume fiscal responsibility and budget their money. However, healthcare is an entirely different story. The government should value the life of all its law abiding citizens regardless of whether that citizen is rich, poor, or in between the two. Someone who is poor or middle income deserves the same amount of respect for their life (as a rich person) if they need an operation or medication to survive. Universal Healthcare is not a privilege but a value that affirms human life as its highest principle.
