Germany also has higher unemployment, and in recent decades its been growing slower (or at least the West has, its harder to measure real growth in the East for a number of reasons). I'm not trying to put down Germany, obviously it is doing quite a few things right, its a prosperous country, but I wouldn't just look at its level of exports and conclude that we should try to do everything the same way. One more point about its exports. The EU is a similar sized economy to the US, but when something is made in South Carolina and sold in CA, it doesn't count as an export, but when its made in Germany and sold in France than it is an export)
