NAND flash makers to focus on lowing costs

Latest news
Hans Wu, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 5 March 2008]

With NAND flash prices continuing to drop, makers including Samsung Electronics, Toshiba and Hynix are all focusing on accelerating their process technology transition to lower cost instead of increase storage density per chip.

Samsung is planning to advance to 40nm in the third quarter this year, while Toshiba is heading to 43nm and Hynix 48nm. However each maker will still focus on the mainstream storage density of 16Gb instead of advancing to 32Gb.

Sources at NAND flash makers think even if densities increase, with pricing still unacceptable among consumers and PC vendors, the makers will still not make any profits. Therefore, the makers can postpone the density upgrade until production costs drop to a level where first-tier PC vendors are more willing to adopt flash as the main storage device in systems, which will lead to increasing volumes.
