We have a market in food and food is cheap, at least for us.

In countries where food is subsidized by the government, and rationed, the things which are rationed are basics like oil and flour, not the hundreds of thousands of other things you and I can purchase at the multitude of fine grocery stores in Northern VA. Cilantro. Lichi nuts. Blueberries in January.

Knowing our government, if they rationed food we'd get industrial grade "cheese" and spongy loaves of white bread. Bread and circuses for the unwashed masses, like ancient Rome.

Nobody who's ever been treated at a government run hospital prefers it to a private hospital on anything other than price. I'd take the cardiac unit at Fairfax Inova over Big Charity in New Orleans or the DC VA every time.

I understand that health care is expensive, my younger son has a chronic disease, and my solution for him is to get health insurance now while he's still covered on our own insurance, which should get him past the waiting period when he is no longer covered by us. And he'll have to carry that coverage for the rest of his life. Portable self-coverage seems like the best option for all but the poorest.

Being feckless and then expecting me to pick up the pieces when you fall apart does not appeal to me.
