Not quite true. In the northeastern Jersey suburbs, most folk decided which community to move into on the basis of the quality of public education. And they tend to love their schools.

Some folk pay for private schools for religious reasons other for prestige. But the prestigious private schools are not so much in demand that it's very hard to gain admission.

As for the college and university level, the quality of the school varies on a lot of dimensions, only one of which is private/public. There are many public institutions that are much better than private ones. Depending on what you are looking for.
