My first exposure to clowns was at the old-style tent circus, where they were in the rings well-removed from the audience, so I'm not afraid of them. I do appreciate the problem, however. My mother had to take me out of the theater because I was so afraid of the Tin Woodman in Wizard of Oz.

Boy, that was a long time ago. My mom hits 90 this year.

My advice: exposure at a distance at first. Face to face exposure to a clown would scare a reasonable child.
