A consumer of school services aka student, values school and education based on the perception of how much he can sell his work as an educated person.

If a ghetto guy in Oakland perceive that his education investment cannot provide his expectation he won't work hard on the school.

Students are not stupid, they see around them the role models. Why a favela kind is going to work hard? He sees every day the adults coming up the hill at the end of a day's work.

(By the way they see as well how well the guys selling drugs are doing)

So he prefer to have a go at futebol. Try to see how good he could be and see if he could match Roberto Carlos or Ronaldinho. And it is more fun than school...

When I discovered -as a 15 years old- that the system was geared to make me a loser and opted out. The system I reckoned, was geared to prepare people to enter an university. The system was devised by the governing elite for the governing elite.

I wanted to know something that I could sell to make a living. So I dropped out and went on to learn the stuff I sell today.

I look to the training book of my brother who was telephone installer and read cover to cover in one single day. That day I knew: I will be a pole-climber. I discovered how a 100V ac 60Hz incandescent lamp worked and started repairing all the electricity in our house, getting electric shocks and making short circuits. Putting lamps that were in series and making them in parallel, installing two switches for a single lamp.
