LSI Logic Named Leading Consumer Electronics Chip Supplier by Dataquest

Dataquest gives LSI Logic high rankings in multiple product categories
targeted for high volume growth

MILPITAS, Calif., Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic Corporation
(NYSE: LSI) the leading systems-on-a-chip company today announced it has
received top industry rankings as a leading chip supplier to next-generation
consumer electronics systems. In the recently published 1996 Consumer
Electronic Semiconductor Market Share report, Dataquest ranks LSI Logic in the
number two position behind Sony for semiconductor shipments used in next
generation consumer electronics systems. LSI Logic's ranking represents a
12.6 percent worldwide market share in next-generation consumer electronics.
"LSI Logic has continually invested in state of the art multimedia
technology for the consumer electronics industry, and we are proud to receive
leadership rankings from a renowned source like Dataquest," said Wilf
Corrigan, Chairman and CEO of LSI Logic. "Using LSI's proven system-on-a-chip
capabilities, we are leveraging our technology and manufacturing experience
to address high-volume consumer markets."
In other significant rankings, Dataquest places LSI Logic number two for
1996 worldwide revenue in the category of "Direct Broadcast Satellite Set Top
Boxes" with a 27.6 percent market share. LSI Logic was ranked number two in
the category of "MPEG-2 and AC-3 Decoder ICs," with 23.6 percent market share.
Dataquest's category of "Next-Generation Consumer Electronics Products"
include DBS set-top boxes, digital cable set-top boxes, 32-/64-bit video game
controllers, video CD players, digital still cameras, digital camcorders for
digital video, and DVD video players.
Dale Ford, Senior Industry Analyst for Semiconductor Application Markets
at Dataquest, said, "LSI Logic's aggressive pursuit of the Next-Generation
Consumer Electronics segment has allowed it to capture nearly 13 percent of
this market segment. LSI Logic is a leading player in five of the seven major
product segments in this category with major contributions in DBS Satellite
Set-top Boxes and video games. This strong, diversified market presence
places LSI Logic in a very solid competitive position in a market that
Dataquest forecasts will experience very high growth."
"LSI Logic was one of only four companies in the top 15 to experience
positive growth in the consumer electronics segment in 1996," said Mr. Ford.
LSI Logic's 41.6 percent revenue growth dwarfed the increases of the other
four companies with positive revenue growth. "This is a significant
achievement given the high level of competition in this segment coming from
both established consumer electronics companies and other top semiconductor
companies," Mr. Ford remarked.
The report summarizes Dataquest's second annual comprehensive study of the
semiconductor companies supplying the market for consumer electronics
products. Rankings, market share, revenue data, and selected unit shipment
information for semiconductor suppliers are presented for key areas in the
consumerhigh-performance semiconductors, with operations
worldwide. The company enables customers to build complete systems on a
single chip with its CoreWare(R) design program, thereby increasing
performance, lowering system costs and accelerating time to market. LSI Logic
develops application-optimized products in partnership with trendsetting
customers, and operates leading-edge, high-volume manufacturing facilities to
produce submicron chips. LSI Logic is headquarters at 1551 McCarthy Blvd.,
