I lived in the suburbs of New York City at the time. I remember the lines, even though I was to young to drive. I also remember seeing a picture in Newsday of a truly massive gas line.

The lines even caused silly conspiracy theories about how the oil companies where keeping loaded tankers off shore to create a shortage.
