ComStream Introduces New Satellite Modem; Compact CM601 satellite modem is a smaller low-profile single rack unit Business Wire - October 14, 1997 08:06 %COMSTREAM SPZ. %CALIFORNIA %DISTRICT %OF %COLUMBIA %COMPUTERS %ELECTRONICS %COMED %INTERACTIVE %MULTIMEDIA %INTERNET V%BW P%BW SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 14, 1997--ComStream, an industry leader in high-performance digital satellite modem technology, Tuesday announced the launch of the CM601 satellite modem, a new lightweight, low-power consumption digital satellite modem for two-way telephony, data and broadcast applications. The new modem complements ComStream's industry benchmark satellite modem, the CM701, and is interoperable with both the CM701 and ComStream's DT7000/8000 earth stations. The CM601 is based on ComStream's proven state-of-the-art digital satellite modulation technology, which offers high satellite space segment efficiency, with savings of 35 percent to 65 percent compared with analog technology. Similar to the CM701 modem, the CM601 modular hardware architecture allows for easy field upgrades of its stand-alone modules. Packaged in a smaller low-profile 1RU (single rack unit) chassis, the CM601 features ComStream's innovative new virtual control panel, Quik-Link. Quik-Link is a Windows 95- or NT-based graphical user interface that allows users to easily configure the modem. Quik-Link is compatible with the CM701 modem as well. "The CM601 is an excellent addition to ComStream's satellite modem product line," said Richard Hercules, vice president and general manager of the Satellite Products Division. "Its compatibility with the CM701 family of modems gives our existing customers a lower cost expansion option, and the solid technology foundation of both modems encourages new customers to select our family of satellite products to build their new networks." The CM601 was recently introduced at the Satellite Communication Exposition and Conference (SCEC) in Washington, D.C. "We were very pleased with the reception the CM601 modem received at the SCEC," Hercules added. "There was considerable interest in the availability of a modem of this caliber." The CM601 modem will be available for customer delivery in the first quarter 1998. Priced lower than the CM701, the CM601 will match or be less than other 1RU chassis modems, depending on the modem configuration. ComStream is an international provider of digital transmission solutions for voice, data, audio and video applications. Satellite modem customers include Bosch Telecom, CANCOM, COMSAT Brazil, Hongkong Telecom, Hutchison Corporate Access, PanAm Sat, PT Aditech Matra, R-Group, Samart and Spaceline.
