Reagan was an amazing personality, but his policies were inherently corrupt and a lie. Bush just tried them again and proved once and for all they don't work and really hurt the country. Also, the righwing myth that Reagan defeated the USSR is a totally phony claim. The USSR was collapsing before Reagan came into power and he was but one of many influences on its demise. Carter was too, just as much as Reagan.

His statement that "government is the problem " (and corporate control the answer) was one of the costliest lies of the century. Like GW Bush, his pro-corporate, pro-rich policies cost the middleclass and the environment dearly while amassing huge amounts of deficits which had to be paid off in the next administrations.

Whether intentional of not, Clinton stumbled on the right balance (minus NAFTA) and gave us an economy great for everyone, not just the top 1% and best-connected corporate contributors.

Ironically, back in 1953 Reagan was a liberal democrat fighting for the workingman against the Standard Oil monopolists. His speeches then were right on and truthful. If he had stayed a populist he could have been the greatest president ever. Instead, he sold out and became great only for rightwing whites and the corporate hierarchy.
