With 10 Mbps bidirectionally, at $40-$50/month, which includes your cable channels AND the modem/setup/etc., (and could also include VoIP), I don't think the telcos have a chance against regions where cable modems will be available.

But as you say, the penetration diffferential is what will keep the telcos busy. In the US, there are about 12 million cable lines, only a portion of which could do two-way cable modems. Then there are about 300 million phone lines, approximately 50% (previously estimated *rough* guess - nobody knows for sure) of which could carry at some speed of ADSL.
