I just don't think it's nice. And yes, I think it is different to ridicule an idea versus a person. That is why we have the fallacy of the Ad Hominem. There's a reason that's a fallacy. "When you mock an idea, particularly when you quote a statement someone else made doing it, its gonna be taken as mocking the person who said it one way or another." A person and an idea are not equivalent. They are not the same thing. If they were, the concept of the Ad Hominem would not exist, would it? My "covert commenting", as you call it, is simply my attempt to skirt ad hominems. I know, that's terribly sneaky of me, but I can but try- as I did here.
