Coppercom Selects Alcatel to Focus on Business Applications for Adsl

LA Times
13-OCT-97
CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 13, 1997-- SOHOs and Small Businesses Can Achieve Affordable High-Speed Internet Access and the Efficiency of Service Integration on a Single Access Line CopperCom, a Silicon Valley start-up focusing on remote access solutions, announced today that it will develop a family of products for small office home offices (SOHOs) and small businesses employing ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) technology. These products will be fully interoperable with Alcatel's ADSL central office multiplex equipment. Alcatel is the world leader in ADSL product development and deployment.

The CopperCom products will enable SOHOs and small businesses to achieve affordable high-speed access to the Internet and the efficiency of integrating multiple services on a single access line.

ADSL technology, which utilizes the existing copper telephone wires connected to homes and businesses, allows customers to access the Internet and participate in multimedia dialogues at speeds up to 100 times faster than today's 56 Kbps modems.

The CopperCom products will integrate Alcatel's DynaMiTe rate adaptive ADSL modem chipset and employ ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) protocols and quality of service guarantees to provide integrated voice, data and video capability. Because Alcatel uses ANSI and ETSI standardized discrete multitone (DMT) modulation, users and telephone companies can be assured of maximum usability and scalability. The CopperCom products will support up to 8Mbps toward the small business location and up to 640 kpbs from the location, per ADSL line.

"Given the widespread acceptance of Alcatel's ADSL solution, we welcome efforts such as these by CopperCom to ensure a multitude of interoperable terminal equipment," said Niel Ransom, VP/GM - Local Networks, Alcatel Network Systems Inc.

"Our vision of integrated access has led us to identify Alcatel as a leading supplier of ADSL central office equipment," said Martin Levetin, CopperCom COO. "We believe that Alcatel's interest in facilitating interoperability will significantly reduce our time to market."
