I think categorizing anything we buy as part of international trade as a transfer of wealth out of the country shows some serious misunderstanding of international trade.

Oil fluctuates between 1/3 and 1/2 of our entire trade deficit. It's up a couple of 100 percent in the last 3 years; 500% since Bush took office. Oil in a 'raw ingredient' in virtually every product or service in the US because everything has a transportation component.

So you can dis oil as "anything we buy" but you will grossly underestimating it's importance. Both in scale and breadth.
