BEAVERTON, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 14, 1997--Sequent Computer Systems, Inc. has won the Gold Award for best Enterprise Server for its NUMA-Q 2000 at the UK's largest and most prestigious IT awards, the Computing Awards for Excellence sponsored by VNU Publications -- publishers of the leading UK IT weekly Computing Magazine.
Launched earlier this year, Sequent's NUMA-Q 2000 (Non-Uniform Memory Access) server provides the power and scalability of a mainframe but with the improved price/performance and flexibility of a client/server platform. The judges recognized Sequent's achievement in taking Intel-based systems to new heights of performance, scalability and robustness addressing the needs of the corporate data center. Sequent has sold about 300 NUMA-Q 2000 data center servers in the first three quarters since the product's introduction.
Paul Kelly, managing director of Sequent Computer Systems UK, accepted the award at a dinner held at London's Grosvenor House Hotel. The judging panel included users, industry experts, suppliers and senior representatives of VNU Publications.
"Since its launch earlier this year, NUMA-Q has redefined the upper-end of the Unix market, opening up new possibilities in the data centre," Kelly said. "The market response to NUMA-Q has been exceptional with Sequent's revenues rising 48% in the second quarter of this year, largely on the back on this breakthrough product. The Gold award recognizes our lead over both NUMA and non-NUMA rivals at the high-end of commercial computing. I am honored to have collected it on the company's behalf."
Sequent also received the Bronze award in the UK IT Partnership Category. Sequent won the award for its work with Eagle Star Insurance, one of the UK's leading insurance companies, to replace Eagle Star's non-compliant Year 2000 systems in time for the start of the next millennium. |
