Paul; A telling blow is the fact that he drove so many creative minds away to start new companies. This is common in high tech companies, but AMD seems to have more fleing than staying. The flambouyant style might be a factor, as creative people often do not like to put down by others, who often used his temper.
The pattern is what you call that of an empire builder, it has expanded to the limit of his command abilities, and has remained static for years. Many lost opportunities and wrong opportunities are the typical pattern of an empire style of company. The leader rules by whim and makes all kinds of errors. A typical example is the ruin of the USSR by Stalin and Napoleons damage to France to pick historical examples.
It seems that what catches his eye, good or bad, is the horse he backs. If he does not like it, it is abandoned.
Look at flash prices, they failed to compete on price, and lost more money that competing would as the lost share will persist.

Not a good picture of a CEO, usually you see that thing with the packed board etc just before a hostile takeover or bankruptcy!!!
