I don't know when that guy came to USA, but Ukrainians are very afraid of inflation and of lack of food, for good reason.

Not being able to afford to eat can happen in any country, depending on your priorities. If your medical expenses to stay alive get too big, you cannot afford to eat, in any country. However, the more money you earn, the more medical expenses you can have, before it becomes a problem. The same applies to housing, hygiene etc. If a Ukrainian gets divorced and his wife gets a court decision that the guy must pay her $500 a month, and his rent is $600, and he earns $900, he cannot afford to eat, either. If he emigrates to USA, he may get away with not paying his ex-wife $500 a month, he will earn more money, and he can afford to eat.

A society where each person is very productive, is a society that can help many people out, making sure they don't starve. A society that is not productive, has more people that cannot afford to eat.

I don't consider food inflation to be worse than other kinds of inflation. There are many kinds of expenses that are hard to get rid of: A place to live, transport, taxes, children-related costs etc. If our food expenses would double, it wouldn't make a big impact on our economy. However, if our house or transport expenses would double, we wouldn't be able to afford to eat ;-)
