DVD review: "3:10 to Yuma." Good acting, fine direction and a plot that makes no sense, whatsoever. I have a problem when a story is totally illogical. I don't mind suspending my disbelief and buying into an alternative reality, but "3:10" is a cowboy movie, not a fantasy or fable movie.
One example, without spoiling the plot. Five lawmen are in a hotel room guarding Russell Crow, a bad man. Seven bad guys ride up, sit on their horses below the room and tell the guys inside they are going to kill them. 7 vs. 5 is to the advantage of the 7, but not when the 7 are sitting ducks and the 5 have cover. Instead, the lawmen allow the gang to recruit townsmen and take cover before they start the fight. And these western towns contained a majority of men who had served in The Civil War. No war veteran would fight that way.
This one I won't spoil. In the last 10 minutes of the movie, Russell Crow acts in a way no person would act. Totally out of character and without motivation.
Supposedly, Elmore Leonard wrote the novel, but the movie may not be true to it. I'm no Leonard fan, but he writes better than this.
Only rent it if you are a big Russell Crow fan or if you want to see one of Peter Fonda's best roles. |
