Great article. I book marked your post for later reference.

Our county is promoting a book called "Three Cups of Tea." Apparently the author is making a local appearance this week.

I checked the book out on Amazon.com. It's about a mountain climber who was saved by some Muslims in Pakistan. The three cups represent the stages of becoming friendly with them. The first cup means you are a stranger. The second, a friend. The third, family.

This climber was so grateful that he promised his new friends that he would bring schools them for their children. Apparently he did so successfully.

I have mixed feelings about this promotion. On the one hand, it depicts the way diverse peoples should really relate to each other. Live and let live. Help each other. Don't kill each other. etc.

On the other hand, I'm afraid it will present the mistaken impression that if we only be nice to terrorists they will offer us all three cups of tea.

Perhaps I will question this author at his appearance.

Ours is a very redneck county, and does not even have a leash law. This choice of titles for promotion, which is really quite significant with newspaper ads, flashing signs and the fire station, free bookmarks, and none-too-subtle arrangements of teacups at the library, is really quite peculiar. amazon.com
