We will go electric, but a) The hulking SUV's will still be burning petrol somewhere and b) the first plug in electrics won't be on the market in soize until 2012 and c) they are appropriate for short-moderate commuting but not for lengthier trips. For example, I could use a plug in hybrid, but my wife probably could not (she drives about 25,000 miles/year, about 80 on average/day. A big shift to plug in hybrids will also place a huge strain on the power grid (who's infrastructure is already teetering). So it's more of an issue than what people want to buy, the lags are substantial and pretty much unavoidable.
