The first is an excellent principle. Not so sure about the second since he plans to make much of his campaign about his opponent wanting to surrender to terrorists. After he has pounded that home and if he wins on it as a platform plank, there won't be much respect left to cross the aisle with. It's too easy to end up with the Bush version, as in "I respect my esteemed opponents when they aren't being lily-livered surrender monkeys who would betray the American people."

That kind of line won the last general election and may work again. If so, I expect lots of the same in Washington after the inauguration.
