The entire of SV should telecommute and not drive at all.

Actually I think the general experience in tech, certainly in R&D, is that having a critical mass of people working in physical proximity (shouting distance) is critical for productive teamwork. There is no long-distance interaction technology that can equal the power of being able to confer, discuss, ask questions, at any moment, any time of the workday.

I work at a (probably typical) very high tech startup with about 50 employees. Working from home is always fine, anytime somebody's personal life requires it. We have a lot of young families, so this happens a lot. But the default is to be in work, interacting face to face, whenever there's not a good reason. IMO this is essential to efficient and productive cooperation when developing complex multi-disciplinary products.
