OT Poetry Class

"My opinion is that "Better man than I" is an British Upper Class put down of an inferior."

I disagree. I see it as a dying admission that Gunga Din is a better man because he can forgive the one who beat him. Or even comfort a dying man who beat him rather then let him die alone.

Tho' I've belted you an' flayed you,
By the livin' Gawd that made you,
You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!

It was common practice in those days to beat soldiers who were little more than slaves who worked for half a pint of rum and maybe some coins and a uniform (clothes.)
