I could be completely wrong about this, but I keep thinking back to the bear in 2001/2002. My recollection was that energy stocks were hit first and hard, then the overall market got hit. And the energies still got hit more.

It's like the Wall Streeters hammer everyone who is in solid companies before they "take out the trash", one could say.

All I can do to keep comfortable with my positions is to be lightly exposed until I sense that some rationality returns to the markets.
