Ten, I don't think you understand how the Internet works. All of these "proprietary" networks like AOL, MSN, etc. still ran on TCP/IP, which are standard protocols (Transmission Control Program/Internet Protocol). Howeve, AOl and others like them were isolated and didn't interact directly with the open Internet. But it was organizations that arose out of Government orgs that advocated for an open and interconnected Internet, which was the original idea that came from ARPANet that our government invented. At the end of the day, the market decided that an open, interconnected net was the winner. But the bottom line is that they all used protocols invented and incubated by our US government.

The Internet has created trillions of dollars of wealth for Americans. And our government invented it, invested in it, and incubated it. I'm glad our government gets involved in birthing new industries. When done properly, our government can be a massive force for helping to create wealth in this country. It just has to be used properly, such as in cases where the barriers to entry are high and a nascent industry cannot get a foothold quickly enough to meet our strategic needs.
