until they step over that line and say "they paid their dues" and are now owed something. No one said anything about paying dues incurring some debt. That's your inference. You don't get any prize in return for paying your dues but a chance. The converse is that those who didn't pay their dues have not earned their chance so they are resented as line jumpers.
