"The converse is that those who didn't pay their dues have not earned their chance so they are resented as line jumpers." I generally assume everyone's life is a hellish ordeal unless proven otherwise ... you think a particular person has had an easy time of it and resent him for it then later you find out his life is a hellish ordeal and it makes you feel like a schmuck for resenting him. Better to just assume everyone's life is sheer hell, that way there is never a reason to resent anyone.
