"Most mass murderers I've read about didn't use guns to kill their victims. Speck strangled and stabbed his victims. Ted Bundy beat and strangled his victims to death. I think this is typical."

Speck is described as a mass murderer but he used a gun to enter the apartment and tied the victims. He then strangled or killed them with knife... Bundy was a serial killer....

Outside a political context, the term "mass murder" refers to the killing of several people. Examples would include shooting several people in the course of a robbery, or setting a crowded nightclub on fire. This is an ambiguous term, similar to serial killing and spree killing.

The USA Bureau of Justice Statistics defines a mass murder as "[involving] the murder of four or more victims at one location, within one event."[citation needed]

Mass murderers may fall into any of a number of categories, including killers of family, of coworkers, of students, and of random strangers. Their motives may range from revenge to financial gain to religious fanaticism. A big difference between serial killers and mass murderers is that a mass murderer may kill many of people at once. Although a serial killer would too, a mass murderer does not suffer from a mental illness. It is a deciding factor when on trial. [1] Many other motivations are possible, including the need for attention or fame [2][3][4].
