At the time, Japanese banks operated in a fairly loose fashion. Business loans were made based on personal relationships, not whether or not it actually made sense. Japanese businesses were growing by leaps and bounds, everything they touched was golden. But, rising competition started to affect business and soon as things slowed, a lot of loans started to go bad. And it kinda snowballed from there.
