Where did this rumor that he has been handled with kid gloves come from? Hate Radio refers to him as a Muslim, though he is not, and that picture of him in that goofy costume was given as proof that he's a terrorist. Even real journalists have accused him of getting a sweetheart deal on his home, which he did not.
There are a lot of black voters in the Democratic primaries, but many, many more whites. And a few more Latinos. If he was not attracting white and latino votes, he would be out of the race. And he's attracting votes by his ideas, his personality, his speechmaking skills, his money raising skills and his age, which may be the most important factor. The states the black vote sways are dinky. South Carolina and Mississippi? Gimme a break.
The simple fact is, if there were a white male candidate in either party with his package of positives, excluding his race, which is a huge negative for a politician, he would have nailed down the nomination and been 30 points ahead of McCain in the polls.
In the past, being black has certainly helped the scores of presidential candidates who have achieved their party's nomination or even finished second. Or third. All none of them. In fact, all of the serious candidates in one party are and always have been white males. Every once in a while the GOP gets an Alan Keyes to attract less than 1% of the vote, or a Liddy Dole to laugh at. Of course, it doesn't help that Alan is a loon. <G> |
