bill: there have been productivity gains---in creative accounting techniques and financial engineering used by the big companies. The increases were virtual, not real. Most of the engineering was created out of a reduction in interest rates between 1990 and 1997,the elimination of dividends and the offering of new debt issues at much lower interest rates. If interest rates increase they are in for a world of hurt. Companies will have to go back to offering stable stock prices and large dividends to keep shareholders happy.
