It strikes me that the issue that Bear has right now is one of gaining confidence in the fixed-income markets.

I happened to be in England when Northern Rock broke. It was obvious within a few day that they were doomed. The B of E bailout actually made the run on the bank get much worse, because the UK govt at the time only guaranteed deposits up to like $50k or so. Similar situation for Bear Sterns... just because the Fed is bailing THEM doesn't mean the Fed will bail their counterparties in the event of failure.

Bear Sterns is the US's first Northern Rock. Won't be the last.
