Maybe this will help you understand better.

If Colin Powell ran for president at the height of his popularity, he would have had a very difficult time getting the nomination because there are so few blacks in the republican party that would vote for him because he is black, but there are loads of bigots that would vote against him because he's black.

In a general election, the disadvantage of being black would be sharply reduced because he'd get a bunch of black democrats to vote for him because he's black (the exact percentage I do not know, but less than Obama for sure because he was a republican), and would face only a modest increase of bigots. The net might actually be beneficial relative to a republican primary.

In the end, IMO his blackness would be a disadvantage in a general election, but if he was a democrat running in a primary he'd have an advantage.
