then again, you know the causes for reduced revenue aren't just deflationary.

let's say another nation took all the business from us.

same facts. is the nation better off or not under that hypothetical?

gdp shouldn't care how much more you get, it should only be concerned with how many dollars you can produce.

it is supposed to be the nation ability to produce actual dollars.

the problem the politicos had is that this number is extremely hard to fake - it is what it is.

now, subjective quality improvements detached from any quantifiable measurements... the politicos *love* that kind of thing b/c they can literally just arbitrarily increase an economy by 5% with the stroke of a pen.

then people act stupid, we get bubbles, we get crashes... it wasn't worth it. at least it won't be when it finally washes out and we get the corresponding bust that lies just ahead.
