rock, the sad truth is, it's political suicide for any elected official to propose tax hikes or spending cuts. The voters in this country simply don't understand the issues or the consequences of continual budget deficits. I doubt that 10% of the electorate even has a basic understanding of what we're discussing here, that there's a connection between U.S. deficits and the reduced purchasing power of the dollar. Based on how the remaining presidential candidates speak about the economy, I wonder if any of them even really understand it, let alone have any conviction to fix it.

The only place I find hope for any change on this front is in the new organization David Walker is heading up, The Peter G Peterson Foundation:
