Is there some mechanism that causes light-skinned blacks to overcompensate to prove that they are authentically black? It's a two edged sword. You are respected and get to go to Paper Bag" parties if you are light. We had black neighbors back in the 70's with a very talkative little girl. She would repeat to my wife her parents comments about their friends. And it always included comments like, "oh, she's light." Being light made it easier for Wright to do well in the community. But he has to play the black card when demagoging.
