All this talk about owning gold. My wife and I were discussing this the other day. It does seem we should be doing something to protect against the falling dollar, but how does one barter with gold. Can I walk down to Wal-Mart with a $100 gold coin in hand, worth over $1000 and buy a weed-eater and get gold in change. We don't want dollars in change.

Just how does owning gold work in this society? Shall we buy bars of the stuff and put them safe deposit boxes. Then how do we use in commerce? Will Tom Cardealer accept a bar of gold for a Lincoln Mark IV?

I like the idea of owning gold to hedge against the waining dollar, but I am puzzled with these questons.
