Yep, the last few lines you posted pretty much say it all if you are trying to obtain insurance on your own. I've been through it and that's why I'm a convert to either universal or some form of 'guaranteed acceptance'... Otherwise you are at the mercy of the insurance companies...

Different carriers have different rules, of course, so shopping around may get you over this hurdle. But perhaps not.
