I don't think for a minute Wright believes the government designed the AIDS virus to wipe out blacks. He says so to justify his message of racial resentment against America.

There is no good excuse for defending Wright's message but that is exactly what Obama's faithful are doing. Its a shame to see people do this.

There is also no good reason for Obama forming a bond with an apostle of hate like Wright. The response of Wright's congregation to his flogging of America is testimony that this theme was expected and welcome in that church. The claim that the "God damn America" and similar clips were unusual events is belied by the enthusiastic reception of the congregation.

But there is nothing in Obama's background that would give him a reason to embrace Wright's message. Obama is half-white by descent but more importantly he was raised in a white family. In a state where a majority of the people are racially mixed. He received a privileged education. He cannot look back on anything in his family history that would give him an historical grudge against America. His ancestors were never enslaved. His American ancestors were all white and for all we know some of them might have been slave owners. He has suffered no discrimination on account of his color.

Yet he embraced as a friend and spiritual leader an apostle of racial resentment and joined a congregation which we have seen eagerly eats up Wright's message of hatred for America. This is puzzling and bizarre.

The idea that a man who would be President of the United States should associate with a church where the words "God damn America" are shouted from the pulpit and embraced by a cheering crowd is ludricious. Only someone whose reason is totally covered over by some irrational emotional commitment could accept and excuse this.
