Thought... AMD is using propietary extenstions which they say will be supported by MS DirectX. Maybe I was wrong in assuming the "15 new instructions" on the Cyrix chip were MMX-II. If MS is showing openness enough to support AMD's instructions, odds are pretty good that they will support something Cyrix/NSM bring out too.

Also, history quiz. Does anyone remember in 1994-1995 when it was said that NexGen and Cyrix were developing their own version of MMX. (i.e. not compatible with Intel's). These "new" instructions on the Cyrix chip might be from back then. Apparently and indepent review I read at the time (BYTE I think it was) said that Cyrix's had the most potential for a meaningful impact in 3d processing and image mainuplation (read video-conferencing).

Wouldn't it be funny if the thing which Intel has championed as the need for faster CPU's (video conferencing) turned out to run BEST on the Cyrix instructions. This raises another interesting question. With the two companies (AMD and Cyrix) developing their own extensions which will aparrently get support from MS, they now have leverage in a patent x-license with Intel for Slot 1 & 2.
