Using your numbers, 45B/m x 12 = 540B/yr which is less by about 100B than our deficit in manufactured goods each year. I don't understand why you would single out the smaller one as being a bigger problem. If anything, the manufactured goods represent much more possible employment content than does the production of oil, i.e. our economy would be MUCH better off if somehow we could magically be competitive for 540B of additional manufactured goods compared to producing 540B of additional energy.

I'll happily admit that people hold out more hope for somehow replacing the 540B in energy, but not many think we will magically displace 540B in manufactured imports.
